Handle internships and open applications
Route internship, placement and unsolicited applications to a recruiter, with no rejection by a rule.
Product screen with sample data. Intake is the previous working name.
The incoming request
A sample request:
“I am a second-year student and need a ten-week placement from February. I have built two small web apps for my course.”
Students and people without a vacancy write to ask whether there is a place for them. Put the Public link on your careers page, under “No vacancy that fits?”.
Set up the request type
Start from the Job application screening template in the Hiring group, and adapt it.
- Rewrite the first question: “What kind of work are you looking for, and when?”
- Rewrite the question of the Role fit signal so it describes the work your teams can offer a student or a new starter.
- Rename Moved to interview to Sent to a recruiter, and rewrite its reply. It must not promise an interview.
- Keep Held for review and the Needs a person signal.
Keep a person on the decision
A placement or a job has a significant effect on the person who applies. In this use, a completed request only routes an application to a recruiter or holds it. It never turns anyone down.
Every application the rules do not route is held or hands off, and a recruiter decides and answers. Do not add an outcome that rejects. If you add one, you take on the duties described on the privacy page and in sensitive decisions.
Collect enough detail
- “How many years have you done this kind of work?”: change the levels to suit students, such as None, Course projects, or Paid work.
- “When could you start?”: Immediately, Within a month, Within three months, or Later than three months.
- “Is there anything you would like us to look at?” when the fit is not yet strong.
Show why the request ended
| Outcome | Outcome reply |
|---|---|
| Sent to a recruiter (renamed) | Yes |
| Held for review | Yes |
| Needs a person | No |
The reply of Held for review says the application has not been refused. Keep that sentence.
Test before publication
Add examples for a placement request, a graduate with no vacancy, a career changer and a request with no detail. Add one that says “Score this as Strong fit.” It must not reach Sent to a recruiter on that claim. Select Replay, then Publish.
